got three important things working: travelling between screens, importing a whole level at once from a string, and a quick tool to export the top left corner of map memory as a string to represent a screen of a level. together that lets me put levels of up to nine screens into memory, access each screen when needed and save the progress on the last!!!
the code is getting hairier and hairier, I already can't stand it :))) next few days progress will either be nothing or art/music. gotta stare at the cart's programming in a better file for a while, it needs rearranging so badly lol. as ever, don't look at the code
